U.S. Advantage Versus Euroland Swelled Last Month in Manufacturing
July 2, 2018
A 5.3-point differential in June between the ISM-compiled U.S. manufacturing purchasing managers index and the IHS-compiled euro area manufacturing PMI represented the widest U.S. advantage in 43 months and was 2.1 points greater than the spread in May. The U.S. PMI score of 60.2 was at a 4-month high, while Euroland’s 55.4 reading constituted the slowest rate of improvement in a year and a half.
The U.S. PMI was 1.5 points higher in June than May despite a 0.2-point dip in the new orders component, a 0.3-point drop in jobs, and just a 0.8-point rise in production. June’s better overall score was spearheaded by longer supplier deliveries, whose component shot up 6.6 points to 68.2. Prices declined 2.7 points but remained high with a reading of 76.8.
Euroland’s PMI of 54.9 was 0.6 points lower in June than May. The PMIs of individual euro area members ranged from 60.1 in The Netherlands to 52.9 in France. Slower rates of expansion last month occurred in Austria, Germany, The Netherlands, Greece, and France. Only the Irish and Italian PMIs went up, and Spain’s was unchanged from May’s 9-month low.
The above calculations may overstate the U.S. advantage in manufacturing. Interestingly, the U.S. manufacturing PMI compiled by IHS, which does the European surveys, fell even more sharply than its Euroland reading, dropping 1.0 point to a 4-month low of 55.4. And in any case, the advantage now enjoyed may prove short-lived. Export demand is crucial to manufacturing, and the euro’s dollar value has diminished, which ought to enhance the price competitiveness of European tradeable goods. The euro had an average value in June of $1.167, 5.4% weaker than its February-March mean value.
