FOMC Preview

Since the 25-basis point federal funds target interest rate hike to a range of 1.50-1.75% on March 21, the 10-year Treasury yield has risen another 7 basis points on balance, the price of WTI oil has climbed 3.5%, and the dollar has appreciated by 3.4% against the yen and 2.5% relative to the euro. A 3.2% decline of the DJIA understates the continuing amount of volatility in the stock market.

The March FOMC meeting produced an upbeat statement that projects, “with further gradual adjustments in the stance of monetary policy, economic activity will expand at a moderate pace in the medium term and labor market conditions will remain strong. Inflation on a 12‑month basis is expected to move up in coming months and to stabilize around the Committee’s 2 percent
objective over the medium term. Near-term risks to the economic outlook appear roughly balanced, but the Committee is monitoring inflation developments closely.” A new dot-plot diagram suggested at least 3 increases of the interest rate target, and additional evidence of higher inflation since the March meeting seemingly enhances the probability of four moves this year.

A press conference is not scheduled after today’s FOMC statement is released at 14:00 EDT (18:00 GMT). The next FOMC meeting on June 12-13 will include new forecasts and have a press conference. Today’s statement is unlikely to do anything to dissuade present expectations in the market that the fed funds target gets raised then to 1.75-2.0%.
