3.5-Point Swing in Manufacturing U.S.-Euro Area PMI Spread
June 2, 2011
At –1.1, the U.S. minus Euroland factory-sector purchasing manager index differential was negative in May for the first time since September. The euro averaged $1.433 in May, a pricey value from an historical standpoint, but one wouldn’t know that from these PMI results. America’s overall index slumped 6.9 points, and key components such as production (down 9.8 points) and new orders (off 10.7 points) were jolted even more sharply. Euroland’s PMI fell by 3.4 points to 54.6, representing an ample rate of expansion. Such was a 7-month low, as was the German index of 57.7. The French PMI dropped 2.6 points to 54.9, and Italy’s fell by 2.7 points to a six-month trough of 52.8. Spain’s 48.2 reading and Greece’s 44.5 were below 50 and thus represented outright contraction. Euroland enjoyed its greatest advantage in manufacturing against the United States since July 2010, only the euro then was much cheaper at $1.278.
