Share prices were highly volatile in November, closing higher in the U.S., Japan and Canada but lower in Great Britain and the euro area. Ten-year sovereign debt yields declined in all the economies examined in this monthly feature. None of the central bank rates among these economies changed key interest rates. Among developing economies, however, monetary policies were tightened by several, including central banks in Mexico, the Czech Republic, the Philippines, Indonesia, South Africa and South Korea. Central banks in Iceland and Israel also raised interest rates.
The dollar fell against commodity-sensitive currencies like the kiwi, loonie and Australian dollar. Net dollar movements in November were insignificant against the euro, yen, Swiss franc, Chinese yuan, and sterling. Oil prices plunged over 20%, but gold gained a little ground.
