May PMI Results Point to Much Greater U.S. Advantage against Euro Area

The U.S. nonmanufacturing PMI, compiled by the Institute of Supply Management rose 1.8 to 58.6 in May, indicating a robust and considerably faster improvement in nonmanufacturing business conditions last month. The sales and prices indices increased by more than 2.0 points to pace the improvement. A U.S. services PMI, compiled by IHS Economics, was 2.2 points higher in May than April at 64.3, corroborating the signal of the ISM report.
Euroland’s services purchasing managers index that IHS calculates fell 0.9 points to 53.8 last month, indicating the slowest rate of business improvement since November 2016. Consequently the ISM U.S. nonmanufacturing PMI minus IHS Euroland services PMI widened 2.7 points to 4.8. That differential constitutes a 7-month high, but even more impressive is the wider sum of this spread and the one between the U.S. and euro area manufacturing purchasing manager indices, shown in the righthand column of the table below. At +9.0, such hasn’t been more U.S.-advantageous since the final month of 2014.
