U.S. PMI Advantage Versus Eurozone Widened Last Month
May 4, 2016
The U.S. non-manufacturing purchasing managers index rose 1.2 points to 55.7 in April, indicating the strongest growth so far this year. Euroland’s services PMI was unchanged at 53.1, in contrast. Accordingly, their difference indicated in the third column of data below rose 1.2 points. The manufacturing indices reported earlier this week had shifted 1.1 points more in Euroland’s favor, so the sum of the two spreads shown in the right-most column edged up 0.1 point to 1.7 points, most U.S.-favorable since last August.
The U.S. report reflected strongly faster expansion of new business, jobs and prices but slower growth in production than seen in March.
Among reporting members of Euroland, the services PMIs rose 0.7 points in France to a 5-month high of 50.6 and 0.9 points in Italy to a 2-month high of 52.1 but ticked down 0.2 points in Spain to a 2-month low of 55.1 and 0.1 point in Germany to a 6-month low of 54.5.
