Central Banks: Interest rate policy reviews are scheduled in Sweden, the Czech Republic, Mexico, Turkey, Morocco and the Philippines. Daly, Cook, Bowman and Barkin of the Fed have speaking engagements, as do Hauser and Kent of the Reserve Bank of Australia, Schnabel of the European Central Bank, Bank of Canada Governor Macklem, and Bank of England Governor Bailey. U.S. bank stress test result will be published, and the Fed’s semi-annual monetary policy report to Congress will be published. A summary of this month’s Bank of Japan Board meeting will be released.
Holidays and Special Events: New Zealanders observe a bank holiday on Friday. Government fiscal years end in Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia and Pakistan. A meeting of European Union leaders begins on Thursday, leading up to the rotation of the EU presidency on July 1 from Belgium to Hungary. Hungary’s performance in that role will be scrutinized closely given Prime Minister Orban’s far-right political beliefs, authoritarian rule and closeness to Russian President Putin. On June 30, French voters go to the polls to determine opponents in the runoff second round of parliamentary elections that will be held one week later for the 577 members of the National Assembly. The first of two U.S. presidential candidate debates between President Biden and former President Trump will be held on Thursday, June 27th.
