U.S. and Euro Area Manufacturing PMIs Compared
June 1, 2020
The table below compares the U.S. ISM-compiled and Euroland’s IHS-compiled manufacturing purchasing manager surveys. In May 2020, the U.S. index recovered 1.6 points to 43.1, whereas Euroland’s PMI rose 6.0 points to 39.4. May’s readings represent two-month highs in each instance, and while the spread between the two readings narrowed by a sizable 4.4 points between April and May, the most recent differential of 3.7 points is just 0.9 points less that that from March. The month-to-month volatility of the U.S. PMI was blunted in both April and May by counterbalancing impact of the sub-index for supplier delivery times. The shutdown of activities caused an upward spike in supplier delivery times in April, mitigating the overall PMI’s decline, and this effect was reversed in May as plans for reopening took shape.
Abstracting from the above distortion, the moderately higher U.S. manufacturing path vis-a-vis manufacturing in the euro area has remained fairly steady over the past year. Excluding April 2020, the spread between the two data series fluctuated between a high of 4.7 points last July and 0.9 in February and has averaged 2.8 points. The right-most column in this monthly feature of Currency Thoughts shows the monthly average EUR/USD exchange rates. Unlike non-manufacturing activities, manufacturing has a very high trade component, and the price competitiveness of one’s exports and import-competing manufacturing goods is influenced greatly by exchange rate changes. May’s mean value in the EUR/USD pair was $1.091, not far removed from the $1.103 average during the previous nine months. The high/low boundaries between the dollar’s weakest month ($1.112 in August 2019) and its strongest month ($1.087 in April 2020) was less than 2.5% apart. It makes intuitive sense that with a stable currency relationship, manufacturing conditions in the United States and Euro moved more or less in tandem.
