U.S. Manufacturing Advantage Over Euro Area Narrowed but Remained Big in October

The differential between the ISM-compiled U.S. manufacturing purchasing managers index and the IHS-compiled Euroland factory PMI narrowed last month to +5.7 from +6.6 in September and +6.7 in August. The dollar’s average value was about 1.5% stronger than its September mean, but concerns about U.S. trade protectionism resulted in Euroland’s weakest business confidence in the future since late 2012.
Euroland’s PMI fell to a 26-month low of 52.0 in October from 53.2 in September, 54.6 in August and 55.1 in July. All individually reporting PMIs from among Eurozone economies were lower than in September, with the sole exception of a 2-month high of 51.8 in Spain’s manufacturing PMI. In the two largest economies using the euro, Germany’s PMI dropped 1.1 points to a 29-month low of 52.2, and the French PMI fell 1.3 points to a 25-month low of 51.2. The purchasing managers index of the union’s third largest economy, Italy, was the only one to slide under the 50 level that delineates improving conditions from deteriorating ones. Such declined 0.8 points to a 46-month low of 49.2.
The U.S. purchasing managers index among manufacturers fell 2.1 points to a 6-month low of 57.7 in October. The slower rate of improvement was most pronounced in new business as highlighted by a 4.4-point slide in orders. Production and jobs saw their subindices decline by 2.0 points each, but the measure of inflation increased 4.7 points to 71.6.
