Narrower U.S. Non-Manufacturing Advantage Last Month Versus Euro Area

The July spread between the ISM non-manufacturing U.S. purchasing managers index and IHS’s service-sector PMI for the euro area was 2.4 points smaller than June’s differential. In combination with a 2.3-point contraction of their manufacturing PMI spread reported earlier this week, the sum of the two first differences was slightly more than halved to 4.5 points, lowest since April. Coincidentally or not, when President Trump turns up the heat on trade and other areas of disagreement, Europe benefits. And for all the bluster about securing “fairer trade”, a separate U.S. release today showed that the U.S. merchandise trade deficit widened from $372 billion in the first half of 2016 to $398 billion one year later and $423 billion in the first half of this year.
The U.S. non-manufacturing PMI dropped 3.4 points to a still decent 55.7 last month, powered by declines of 7.4 and 6.2 points in production and new business. The inflation index advanced 2.7 points to a reading of 63.4, which will likely help motivate the FOMC to implement two more interest rate hikes this year rather than one. It should be also noted that the IHS services PMI for the United States fell less sharply last month — just 0.5 point to 56.0.
Europe’s services PMI dropped 1.0 point in July to a 2-month low of 54.2 despite a 4-month high reached in the German PMI. Spain was the weak link in July. Its services PMI of 52.7 was at a 56-month low and below the readings for Italy (a 2-month low of 53.0), France (also a 2-month low at 54.4) and Ireland (a 4-month low of 56.8).
