Non-Manufacturing PMIs in the U.S. and Eurozone

Euroland’s services purchasing managers index rose only 0.4 points in October, much less than the 2.2-point increase in America’s non-manufacturing PMI. The U.S. advantage, seen by subtracting the eurozone reading from the U.S. score widened 1.8 points as a result to a 3-month high of 5.0 points. The sum of this differential and the manufacturing spread where Euroland commands an advantage of 2.2 points equaled +2.8, double the U.S. advantage enjoyed in September.
Improvement in U.S. non-manufacturing was paced by a 5.3-point leap in new business and a 2.8-point rise in business activity and production. All four largest economies in Euroland experienced faster positive growth in service-sector activity during October than in September. The fastest growing service sector in Euroland was again Ireland, but the pace of its growth slowed to a 4-month low of 60.1 from a reading in September of 62.4.
