Central Banks: Monetary policy reviews are scheduled at the European central bank and in Australia, the U.K., India, Iceland, Mexico, Poland, and the Czech Republic. A slew of public speaking engagements by various central bankers, several like Bailey of the Bank of England, Bullock of the Reserve Bank of Australia and Lagarde of the ECB in press conference after their interest rate decisions. Another such event that may attract much attention involves Fed Governor Lisa Cook, who will deliver a speech at the Economic Club of Miami on Friday. Quarterly policy statements will arrive from the Bank of England and Reserve Bank of Australia, and the summary of the recent Bank of Japan Board meeting will get published.
Holiday and Events: New Zealanders will celebrate Waitangi Day on Friday. OPEC ministers hold a meeting early in the week. This will be the last week before lower house parliamentary elections in Japan that occur on February 8, so that campaign is likely to get intensifying coverage. A partial shutdown of the U.S. federal government seems quite likely at this writing.
Purchasing Manager Surveys: Over 65 of them arrive covering manufacturing, service sector activity and construction for various and sundry economies.
U.S. Economic Data Releases: Labor Dept employment situation report including employment, wage growth and the jobless rate, construction spending, motor vehicle sales and U. Michigan consumer sentiment index. Also weekly jobless insurance claims, energy inventories, mortgage applications and chain store sales.
Japanese Releases: Household spending, monetary base, currency reserves, and indices of leading and coincident economic indicators.
Other Asia: South Korean, Indonesian and Filipino consumer prices. Indonesian GDP and trade balance. South Korea’s current account.
Euroland Releases: CPI, PPI and retail sales.
Members of the Euro Area: German, Italian, and Cypriot retail sales. German, Italian, French, Spanish, Slovakian, Estonian and Latvian industrial production. Austrian, French, and German trade balances. Estonian CPI and Austrian wholesale prices.
U.K. and Switzerland: British Nationwide and Halifax house price indices. Swiss consumer sentiment and unemployment.
Eastern Europe: Romanian, Bulgarian, Czech, Russian, and Hungarian retail sales. Hungarian and Russian industrial production Romanian PPI and Czech CPI.
Australia, New Zealand and Turkey: Australian and Turkish trade balances. New Zealand building permits and employment. Turkish CPI and PPI.
Canada and Brazil: Canadian labor statistics and IVEY-PMI survey.
