FOMC Preview

Since the February 1 FOMC rate hike of 25 basis points, the dollar has advanced 2.7% against the yen and 1.8% versus the euro. The 10-year Treasury yield is now 18 basis points more elevated than then. The DOW and price of WTI oil have dropped by 4.6% and 8.6%, and the price of bitcoin tokens has soared slightly more than 20%. Signs of labor market tightness persist, with monthly employment growth averaging 350,000 over the last three reported months, and unemployment of 3.6% just barely above the earlier low of 3.4%. The latest 12-month increases in the CPI, total PCE price deflator, core PCE deflator and average hourly earnings of 6.0%, 5.4%, 4.7% and 4.4% are each much higher than what Federal Reserve officials seek. U.S. GDP growth during the second half of 2022 averaged about 3.0% annualized per quarter. The scene was set for a 50-75 basis point rate hike, before the failure of three mid-sized U.S. banks and the jump of banking tensions across the Atlantic. Some analysts are urging a pause, but the view that making no rate hike might boost long-term expected inflation will probably prevail. The most common forecast circulating in the street is that the FOMC will compromise on a rate hike of 25 basis points.

Today’s meeting coincides with updated growth, inflation, and interest rate forecasts. Special attention will be paid to the indicated likely cresting point of the federal funds target: will such exceed 6.0%? Equally important will be clues to how long the interest rate will be kept at its peak. The FOMC statement and forecasts due at 18:00 EDT will be followed by Chairman Powell’s press conference beginning 30 minutes later.
