Central Banks: Interest rate policy meetings are scheduled in Canada, South Africa, Hungary, Chile, Colombia and Argentina. The Bank of Canada’s quarterly Monetary Policy Report and a summary of discussions at this past week’s Bank of Japan Board meeting will be released.

Holidays and Special Events: The Lunar New Year holiday ushering in the year of the rabbit begins tomorrow, resulting in varied national closures to include China (Jan 21-27), Malaysia (Jan 23-23), Singapore (Jan 23-24), Indonesia on January 22, and both South Korea and Vietnam on January 23. Australians celebrate Australia Day on Thursday. In New Zealand, a Labour Party leadership vote has been scheduled for Sunday, January 22;  the winner will automatically succeed Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, whose second three-year term was to have ended in October but just resigned several months before the parliamentary election that month.

Scheduled U.S. Data Releases: Quarterly 4Q GDP. Monthly S&P Global-compiled PMI, personal income, personal expenditures, PCE price deflator, Chicago Fed National Activity Index, K.C. and Richmond Fed manufacturing survey results, new home sales, pending home sales, index of leading economic indicators, durable goods orders and advance merchandise trade deficit. Weekly jobless insurance claims, chain store sales, mortgage applications and energy inventories.

Euroland Releases: Economic sentiment, consumer confidence, preliminary purchasing manager survey results, and money and credit growth.

Members of the Euro Area: German and French PMI results. German import prices, consumer confidence and IFO business climate index. French and Spanish GDP. French business confidence, index of leading economic indicators, and consumer sentiment. Italian industrial sales, business confidence and consumer confidence. Italian, Spanish, and Finnish producer prices. Spanish unemployment, Irish retail sales, and Austria’s manufacturing purchasing managers index.

U.K. and Switzerland: British preliminary PMI results, PPI, public sector net borrowing, Rightmove house price index and the CBI surveys of industrial trends and distributive trades. Switzerland’s trade balance and ZEW expectations index.

Eastern and Nordic Europe: Polish retail sales, industrial production and PPI. Danish retail sales and consumer confidence. Swedish unemployment, consumer confidence and trade balance.

Japanese Releases: Preliminary PMI results, corporate service prices, Tokyo consumer prices, and index of leading economic indicators.

Selected Other Asian Data: Singaporean consumer prices and industrial production. South Korean and Hong Kong GDP. South Korean business confidence and consumer sentiment. India’s index of leading economic indicators.

Australia and New Zealand: Australian and New Zealand quarterly consumer prices. Australian flash PMI results, PPI, business confidence, business conditions, import/export prices, and Westpac-compiled index of leading economic indicators. New Zealand service sector PMI and NBNZ business sentiment index.

South Africa and Turkey: South African and Turkish business confidence. South African PPM and index of leading economic indicators. Turkish consumer sentiment.

Brazil and Mexico: Brazil’s current account. Mexican trade balance and index of leading economic indicators.
