U.S.-Ezone Manufacturing PMI Differential Narrowed in September

The Institute of Supply Management’s U.S. manufacturing purchasing managers index settled back 0.6 points to a 2-month low of 55.4 in September. Sub-indices for production and orders showed a more pronounced slowdown, dropping 2.3 and 7.4 points under their August readings.
The IHS-compiled euro area factory PMI, in contrast, increased 2.0 points to a 25-month high of 53.7 in September. And as a result, the spread between the data series and the aforementioned ISM-compiled U.S. data series narrowed 2.6 points to 1.7 points, which is its most convergent point since before the pandemic began. To be sure, IHS’s own U.S. manufacturing PMI edged up 0.1 point to 53.2, and so the spread between that outcome and IHS’s Euroland PMI declined by 1.9 points.
Euroland’s improved factory conditions in September were skewed heavily toward Germany, whose PMI rose 4.2 index points to 56.4. Spain, Ireland, and Greece had PMI readings below 51.0, and the Austrian and French readings were at 51-something. When excluding Germany, factory production in the euro area was at a 3-month low. Exports are reviving much more discernibly in Germany than other members of the euro area.
