Rapid U.S. and European Contractions Last Month in Factory Activity
May 4, 2020
Euroland’s IHS-compiled manufacturing purchasing managers index dropped 11.1 points in April to a the lowest level recorded in the history of this survey dating back to 1997. IHS also calculates a U.S. manufacturing PMI, and it dropped by 12.4 points to 36.1. But the more widely watched U.S. manufacturing purchasing managers survey conducted by the Institute of Supply Management fell by 7.6 points to 41.5, and the differential between such and the IHS’s euro area PMI consequently widened 3.5 points to more than a 7-year high of 8.1 index points.
Real GDP fell more sharply last quarter in Euroland than the United States. Second-quarter growth in each region will fall significantly more heavily in the current quarter, and beyond midyear the outlook gets a whole lot murkier. Europe thus far has had 26% more identified coronavirus cases than the United States and more than 80% greater deaths.
The Great Recession was felt more acutely in Europe than the United States and for a more prolonged span of time. It’s not clear if that will again be the case. Personal consumption represents a higher share of GDP in the United States, so regardless of the time path under which social distancing is loosened, consumer confidence will exert a proportionally more enormous influence on the U.S. business cycle than Europe’s. More widely used Covid-19 testing in Europe than the U.S. intuitively suggests that household psychology will normalize more quickly there than here. Equally if not more important in determining which of the two economies rebounds faster will be the evolution of Covid-19 before a widely accessible vaccine becomes available. A second wave of the disease is predicted by scientists, but it’s unknown where its likely to prove most lethal. The second wave of the Spanish flu a century ago hit Europe much harder than the United States. There’s no reason why that pattern should be repeated or not.
