U.S. Minus Euro Area Manufacturing PMI Spread Swings into Positive Territory
March 1, 2018
The ISM-compiled manufacturing purchasing managers index exceeded the IHS-compiled Euroland PMI in February for the first time since September. Their differential was +2.2 points compared to -0.5 in January, -1.3 in December and -1.9 points in November. At respective February readings of 60.8 and 58.6, manufacturing in both economies is expanding robustly, but the faster growth is now happening in the United States. This isn’t surprising in light of the appreciating euro whose average dollar translation value last month was about 1.0% greater than in January and 16% higher than in February 2017.
A 1.7-point rise in the U.S. PMI in February was powered by employment (up 5.5 points, inventories (up 4.4 points), order backlogs (up 3.6 points) and supplier deliveries (up 2.0 points). It’s rare as happened in the latest report to see the overall PMI rise in spite of significant month-to-month declines in production (2.5 points) and new business (1.2 points lower). In fact, the U.S. manufacturing purchasing managers index that is calculated by IHS, which has proprietary control over the European indices, did slip 0.2 points to 55.3 in February from a 34-month high of 55.5 in January.
Euroland’s factory purchasing managers index in February of 58.6 was a full point below January’s 59.6 and two points less than December’s record high of 60.6. The three largest economies using the euro saw their PMI readings drop last month by 0.5 points to 60.6 in Germany, 2.5 points to 55.9 in France and 2.2 points to 56.8 in Italy. In Spain, the fourth largest euro-sharing economy, the manufacturing PMI went up 0.8 points to 56.0.
