Faster Non-Manufacturing Growth in the U.S. and Euroland

The Institute of Supply Management reported a big 4.5-point jump during September in the U.S. non-manufacturing purchasing managers index. At 59.8, such signaled the quickest expansion of activity since August 2005. Sub-components for new business, prices, and production increased by 8.4, 5.9 and 3.8 points, respectively.
IHS Markit Economics calculated a 1.1-point increase in Euroland’s service-sector PMI to 55.8, most since May. The German and French service-sector PMIs each rose by 2.1 points, but Italy’s index suffered a 1.9-point drop in September.
The U.S. index minus Euroland’s PMI value climbed 3.4 points to +4.0, the widest spread in a year. And if one adds that 4.0 differential to the spread between the U.S. and Ezone manufacturing PMIs, the resulting 6.7-point differential constitutes America’s most advantageous relative growth since December 2014. Both economies are performing well, suggesting that the bias of inflationary risk going forward lies to the upside.
