U.S. Non-Manfacturing PMI and Ezone Services PMI

The U.S. non-manufacturing purchasing managers index rose 2.3 points to 57.5 in April, signifying a robust expansion whose rate of growth accelerated significantly that month. Production (up 3.5 to 62.4), orders (up 4.3 to 63.2) and prices (up 4.1 to 57.6) each expanded much more quickly than in March, while jobs continued to grow slowly. While the widely monitored non-manufacturing PMI data series is prepared by the Institute of Supply Management, Markit Economics compiles a services purchasing managers index more akin to the Euroland data series, and this rose 0.6 points to 53.1 in April, signaling a slower growth rate than the ISM index and also less substantial improvement between March and April.
Euroland’s services PMI rose 0.6 points to 56.4 last month. The new level implies the fastest expansion since April 2011. Services in Ireland rose to 61.1, indicating a 10-month high. Spain’s 57.8 reading represents a 20-month high, and Italy’s score of 56.2 was a 116-month high. The German and French service sector PMIs of 56.4 and 56.7 were somewhat below March levels but above February levels. Altogether, the data suggest that real GDP growth early in the second quarter of 2017 was expanding at about a 0.7% pace, which is somewhat better than the 0.5% rate seen on average during the first quarter.
The spread between the U.S. non-manufacturing PMI and Euroland’s service-sector PMI swung 1.9 points from -0.8 to +1.1. However, the U.S.-minust Euroland manufacturing PMI differential swung in the opposite direction by 2.9 points from +1.0 to -1.9. Since services represent a larger share of economic activity than does manufacturing, it appears that relative economic growth in the U.S. versus Euroland did not materially change between March and April.
