Soft Euro Lifting Euroland Manufacturing at U.S. Expense
May 2, 2017
The manufacturing purchasing managers index of Euroland, 56.7, surpassed its U.S. counterpart, 54.8, in April for the first time since April. The lagged effect of the post-Trump dollar rally is a major reason why. Manufacturing is more sensitive to currency movement than non-manufacturing. Although the table below uses the ISM compilation for its U.S. component and the survey done by Markit Economics for Ezone data, Markit Economics also compiles a U.S. PMI, and this too fell in April, printing at a 7-month low of 52.8 or 3.9 points less than its Ezone PMI estimate.
The drop in the Institute of Supply Management’s U.S. manufacturing PMI was pace by decreases of 7.0 points in orders and 6.9 points in jobs. Production actually grew a tad faster in April than March.
Among members of the euro area, the PMIs of France, Greece and Austria each improved more than 1.0 point. However, those of Germany and The Netherlands barely changed. Only Greece had a sub-50 reading, implying a contraction of activity. The other individual PMI scores among reporting Ezone members ranged from Spain’s 54.5 to Germany’s 58.2.
Although not in the Ezone, the British manufacturing purchasing managers index deserves special mention. Such rebounded from a 4-month low of 54.2 in March to a 3-year high of 57.3 in April, alleviating some recent concern about a spate of weakening and weaker-than-forecast British data. The U.K. began a 2-year Brexit countdown last month and is expected to have a lower potential GDP growth rate when it fully emerges from the European Union.
