Accelerating Economic Activity in the U.S. and Euroland

The U.S. non-manufacturing purchasing managers index rose 2.4 points in November to a 13-month high. Increases of 4.0 points and 5.1 points in production and jobs powered the improvement. Euroland’s services PMI went up less sharply to an 11-month high of 53.8 from 52.8, and this widened the differential between the two indicators by 1.4 points to 3.4 points. All reporting members of the euro area had scores above 50, ranging from 56.0 in Ireland to 51.6 in France. The sum of the manufacturing and non-manufacturing PMI differentials in November was +2.9 points in the U.S. favor. Such was a considerably bigger advantage than conveyed by the combined spread of 0.4 points in October but not as much so as September’s spread of 3.8 points.
