Closest Convergence of U.S. and Euroland Manufacturing Sectors Since January 2018

In the ISM report, a 5.9-point drop in production resulted in the weakest U.S. PMI reading (47.2) since June 2009. The components for orders of 46.8 and jobs of 45.1 were 0.4 and 1.5 points below their November results. The IHS survey of U.S. manufacturing also resulted in a lower PMI reading last month than in November.
The IHS-compiled Euroland manufacturing PMI fell by 0.6 points to 46.3, and its differential with the ISM’s PMI estimate was 0.3 points less negative than in November. Six of the eight individually derived manufacturing PMI readings for countries using the euro were below the 50-level, which implies deteriorating conditions: Germany’s 2-month low of 43,7, Austria’s unchanged 46.0, Italy’s 80-month low of 46.2, Spain’s 2-month low of 47.4, an 80-month Dutch low of 48.3, and Ireland’s 3-month low of 49.5. The Greek and French scores of 53.9 and 50.4 were also below their respective November levels.
President Trump needs a depreciating dollar to prevent further dissipation of the U.S. advantage in manufacturing vis-a-vis Euroland.
