Only a Slight U.S. Factory Sector Advantage Versus Euroland

The ISM-compiled U.S. manufacturing purchasing managers index in October rose 0.5 index points to a 2-month high of 48.3, and Euroland’s IHS-compiled PMI edged 0.2 points higher to 45.9, which also represents a 2-month high. The differential between those two data series of 2.4 points in favor of the United States was similar to the spreads of 2.1 points in each of the two prior months. Last month’s PMI levels were below 50 in each economy, indicating a further contraction of factory sector conditions but a slightly slower pace of deterioration. October saw the third straight sub-50 U.S. reading. Euroland has recorded sub-50 PMIs since February, and the widest U.S.-minus-Euroland differential (7.8 points) happened back in March. Taking additional account of the JPMorgan global manufacturing PMI that from an 81-month low of 49.3 in July rose to 49.5 in August, 49.7 in September and 49.8 in October, investors are guardedly hopeful that the drag from manufacturing is now flattening now at a level that falls short of sending whole economies into recession. But for this scenario to bear out, it’s critically important that the U.S.-Sino trade conflict not re-escalate. A large percentage of manufactured goods are destined for export, which makes the factor sector very sensitive to trends in two-way trade.
