Spread Widens Between U.S. Non-Manufacturing PMI and Euroland’s Services PMI

The ISM-compiled U.S. non-manufacturing purchasing managers index rose 3.1 points in September to 61.6, which is a record high for this 10-year-old data series. Sub-indices for business activity/production and for jobs climbed by 4.5 points and 5.7 points, while those for prices and new business were 1.4 and 1.2 points above their August readings. The sources of this confirmation of quickening improvement cut across most components of the index.
The IHS-compiled service sector purchasing managers index for the euro area also improved and at a faster rate, but the index climbed merely 0.3 points to a 3-month high of 54.7. This rise, moreover, proved limited because the PMIs of Spain and France fell in September to 58- and 4-month lows.
The algebraic sum of the manufacturing and non-manufacturing PMIs increased to +13.5 in September (as shown in the right-most column below) from 10.8 in August and 4.5 in July. At 13.5 points, the combined differential was at its most U.S.-advantageous level since November 2014.
