July 1, 2014

The U.S. PMI dipped by 0.1 to a reading of 55.3, but the euro area manufacturing index declined by 0.4 points to 51.8.  The differential between those measures of activity consequently widened to 3.5 points, largest since December, from 3.2 in May.  The euro averaged $1.360 per month in June, marking the seventh month in a row with an average exchange rate between $1.36 and $1.38.

In the U.S. survey, orders grew faster, while jobs and production and prices advanced more slowly.  In the euro area, the Dutch, French and Greek PMIs were at least 1.0 points lower in June than May, and the German, Italian and Austrian PMIs each fell slightly.  The Spanish index jumped 1.7 points to an 84-month high of 54.6, and the Irish PMI also reflected faster growth last month.
