Recent See-Saw Pattern in Spread between U.S. and Euroland Manufacturing PMIs
September 1, 2020
The ISM-compiled U.S. manufacturing purchasing managers index rose 1.8 index points to a 19-month high of 56.0 in August and easily beat analyst expectations. Euroland’s IHS-compiled manufacturing PMI, by contrast, dipped 0.1 point to a 2-month low of 51.7. The spread between those two data series thus shifted 1.9 points more advantageously toward the United States. The pattern in that U.S.-minus-Euroland PMI spread has lately been fluctuating back and forth, falling from 3.0 in January to 0.9 in February, then rising to 4.6 in March and then 8.1 in April, but dropping to 3.7 in May, bouncing up to 5.2 in June, dropping again to 2.4 in July and recovering to 4.3 points last month. The good news is that factory activity is recovering on both sides of the Atlantic, but a continuing need exists for the pandemic to remain acceptably in check for this revival to be maintained.
The rise of the U.S. PMI from 54.2 to 56.0 got a huge lift from faster growth in demand. Production also grew faster in August than July to to a lesser extent than demand. Jobs continued to be shed but not as rapidly last month, and inventories prevented the overall index from climbing even higher. A corroborating 2.1-point July-to-August advance in the IHS-compiled U.S. manufacturing purchasing managers index to 53.1 is also worth noting.
Within Euroland, the Italian PMI of 53.1 constituted a 26-month high, and Germany’s PMI of 52.3 was at a 22-month high. The Dutch reading of 52.3 and Greek outcome of 49.4 were 6- and 2-month highs, but the Irish, Austrian, Spanish and French readings were lower in August than July. Also, those for Spain, France and Greece were below the 50 level, signaling flat to slight deterioration last month.
