Central Banks: Turkey, South Africa and South Korea are holding scheduled monetary policy reviews. Bank of Japan Branch managers hold a quarterly meeting and will release a report on regional economic conditions. The Federal Reserve’s regional study known as the Beige Book gets published. Minutes from the last European Central Bank Governing Council meeting will be published. Williams and George of the Fed speak publicly. So do Saunders of the Bank of England and Governor Kuroda of the Bank of Japan.

Holidays and Special Events: Japanese markets closed Monday for Coming of Age Day. China and the United States are scheduled to sign the Phase I trade agreement in Washington on Wednesday. Voters in Taiwan elect their president and members of parliament on Saturday, tomorrow. It’s also quite possible that the U.S. senate impeachment trial of President Trump will have begun by week’s end.

Scheduled U.S. Economic Statistical Releases: Consumer prices, retail sales, producer prices, December’s federal budget balance, housing starts, building permits, industrial production, capacity usage, small business sentiment, employment trends index, IBD/TIPP optimism index, the Philly Fed and Empire State manufacturing indices, the National Association of Home Builders housing index, the JOLTS index of job hires and separations, Treasury-compiled capital flows, import prices, and the U. Michigan/Reuters consumer confidence index. Also weekly jobless insurance claims, consumer comfort, chain store sales, energy inventories, and mortgage applications.

Japanese and Chinese Data: Japanese and Chinese money and bank lending growth. Japanese bankruptcies, machinery orders, producer prices, machine tool orders, economy watchers index, current account, and tertiary index. Chinese fourth-quarter GDP. Chinese trade balance, retail sales, industrial production, fixed asset investment, foreign direct investment, housing prices and unemployment rate.

Selected Other Asian Data Releases: Singaporean, Indonesian, Indian and South Korean trade balances. Malaysian and South Korean unemployment. Indian consumer prices and wholesale prices. South Korean import prices.
