U.S.-Minus-Euroland Advantage in Manufacturing Narrowed in April

The widening of the ISM U.S. minus euro area IHS purchasing purchasing manager manufacturing differential that had occurred in March was exactly reversed in April. The spread dropped from 7.8 points to 4.9 points, as the euro recorded its firmest monthly average against the dollar since December 2017. Manufacturing is more sensitive to movements in foreign exchange rates than are service sector activities, and a weaker euro enhances the export price competitiveness of Euroland manufactured goods.
The ISM-compiled U.S. manufacturing PMI fell 2.5 points last month to 52.8, a 30-month low. Subindices for production, orders, jobs and prices each declined by 3.5 or more points.
Euroland’s IHS-compiled manufacturing PMI rose 0.4 points to a 2-month high but was below a reading of 50, implying a continuing deterioration of operating conditions last month. Weakness was concentrated in capital goods and intermediate goods. Orders and production each contracted last month. The German, Italian and Austrian PMI readings were below the 50 level, and the Dutch and Irish indices, above that threshold, were at 34- and 30-month lows. French manufacturing was stagnant, neither improving nor deteriorating. The brightest element in the report was that the Greek index increased 1.9 points to its best level (56.6) since mid-2001, but Greece represents a small segment of the Euroland economy. Input price inflation stayed low.
