U.S.-Minus-Euroland PMI Spread Narrowed in January
February 1, 2018
The differential between the ISM’s U.S. manufacturing purchasing managers index and the IHS-compiled PMI for the euro area had roughly doubled in December to -4.0 but then was cut by half to -2.0 last month. Both indices remained well above 50, indicating very strong rates of improvement, but each index was below December’s level. That means the rate of improvement in the two economies was not as fast as in December, but Euroland saw a greater deceleration than the United States in January, just as it had experienced a faster acceleration of improvement in December. It should be noted, moreover, that the IHS survey of U.S. manufacturing actually produced a marginal further acceleration in the rate of U.S. improvement during January to a 34-month high.
The more widely followed ISM U.S. purchasing managers index dipped only 0.2 points to a 2-month low of 59.1. The drop was muted by a 4.4-point increase in the price component, a development that could herald four, rather than three, hikes of the federal funds rate during 2018. The sub-indices for new business, production, and employment respectively declined by 2.0, 0.7 and 3.9 points last month.
The IHS purchasing managers index for Euroland fell back 2.2 points to 61.1 in January. As in the U.S. report, the index embodied a sharp intensification of input cost pressure and output price inflation. Oil was only one of several factors behind this development. With demand growth outstripping capacity, supplier delays lengthened. On a more encouraging note, manufacturing confidence was at a record high for this 21-year data series, and industrial orders came close to setting a new peak. The lowest PMI among the eight members of Euroland reporting its own PMI involved Greece, and even that economy recorded a respectable score of 55.2, indicating the fastest rate of improvement in 123 months.
