Biggest Euro Area Advantage Over U.S. Since August 2016

The ISM purchasing managers index for U.S. manufacturing settled back a further 0.5 points in November to 58.2 from 58.7 in October and a 13-year high of 60.8 in September. A reading of 58.2 still represents a robust rate of expansion and all the more so because sub-indices for production (up 2.9 points to 63.9) and new business (up 0.6 points to 64.0) each penetrated their 60-plus levels more deeply. The overall index fell mainly because of declines of 4.9 points in supplier deliveries and 3.0 points in prices.
Only in April 2000 did IHS’s purchasing managers index of Euroland manufacturers post a higher value than the reading of 60.5 in November, which was 1.6 points above October’s level. Export growth and employment actually did hit record highs, as did the national PMIs for The Netherlands and Austria. One has to look back more than 80 months to find faster factory expansion rates for Germany, France, Italy, Spain and Ireland, and every nation in the group had a PMI reading above the 50 level that separates contraction from expansion.
The U.S.-minus-Euroland PMI spread swung to -1.9 in November from +0.2 in October and +2.7 in September. Insofar as the dollar remains comparatively soft against the euro, it is somewhat surprising to see Euroland manufacturing improve vis-a-vis U.S. manufacturing.
