PMIs: Euroland Did Better than the United States Last Month

The U.S. non-manufacturing purchasing managers index slumped 3.5 points to an 11-month low of 53.9 in July, depressed by declines of 5.4 points in new business, 4.9 points in business activity, and 2.2 points in employment. Euroland’s services PMI, by contrast, stayed unchanged with a reading of 55.4 in July, causing the differential between the diffusion indices of these two data series to swing from +2.0 in June to -1.5 in July. Both indices were comfortably above the 50 no-change level in July, suggesting a good positive growth momentum in each case. But the United States no longer enjoyed an advantage in the momentum of its upturn vis-a-vis Euroland’s momentum.
The rightmost column in the table below adds the U.S.-Ezone non-manufacturing PMI spread to the manufacturing spread. The resulting sum of the two spreads, which had peaked in February with a U.S. advantage of 4.4 points, was -1.8, suggesting an even larger advantage for Euroland than seen in May and indeed its best relative position in a year.
