Bigger U.S. than Ezone Acceleration in Manufacturing Last Month

The U.S. Institute of Supply Management reported a 1.5-point increase in the manufacturing purchasing managers index to a very robust 26-month high reading of 56.0. That advance, which followed a combined 2.5-point increase in the last two months of 2016, was powered in January by gains of 3.5 points in prices, 3.3 points in jobs, and 2.0 points in production. The growth pace in new business stayed pretty level at a rapid pace with a reading of 60.4.
The ISM manufacturing PMI in January was 0.8 points higher than Euroland’s manufacturing PMI (55.2) compiled by Markit Economics. The Ezone score was 0.3 points above its December reading. The differential favored the United States for the first time in six months despite what President Trump’s adviser on trade, Peter Navarro, calls a grossly undervalued euro. Manufacturing in the euro zone was restrained by an accelerating downturn in Greece, whose PMI sank 2.7 points to a 16-month low of 46.6. Austria (57.3), The Netherlands (56.5) and Germany (56.4) recorded higher manufacturing PMIs last month than did the United States.
