FOMC Preview

The last FOMC meeting occurred right before the U.S. election result heard round the world. Trump’s unanticipated victory and the broad-based policy changes that he intends to pursue have also produced unexpected market moves. Stocks are sharply higher. Sovereign debt yields have risen even more dramatically. The dollar has rallied especially against the yen. Oil is firmer, aided also by an OPEC agreement to cut production.

Fed officials have sent strong rhetorical signals that the fed funds rate will be raised at today’s meeting. A more pronounced lift-off in inflation justifies such a move, the size of which is expected to be 25 basis points just like last December’s initial hike and all the increases in the previous 2004-06 tightening cycle. U.S. business and consumer confidence are higher, but other indicators are mixed. In November, retail sales went up only 0.1%, and industrial production dropped 0.4%, for instance. The labor participation rate slipped in both October and November.

Markets are likely to react more strongly to the press conference and new Fed forecasts than to the rate hike, which has been the worst kept secret. Stay tuned.
