U.S. Non-manufacturing Activity Quickened in June Absolutely and Relative the Euro Area

The U.S. Institute of Supply Management’s non-manufacturing purchasing managers survey revealed a 3.6-point increase in June to 56.5, implying pretty robust expansion. This followed a slowdown in May and raised the rate of expansion to a 7-month high. The reacceleration was broadly based, with business activity up 4.4 points, orders up 5.7 points, and jobs rising 3.0 points. Inflation also picked up.
In Euroland, according to the Markit Economics survey, service sector activity slipped 0.5 points to a reading in June of 52.8, with France sliding to a 3-month low and sub-50 score of 49.9. The German services PMI faltered to a 13-month low of 53.1, and Ireland’s reading was at a 2-month low. The spread between the U.S. and Eurozone PMIs swung from -0.4 in May to +3.7 in June, and the sum of that differential and the manufacturing PMI spread increased to +4.1 points in June, its most U.S. favorable point in eleven months.
