Big Deterioration Last Month of U.S. Non-Manufacturing Relative to Euroland

In May, the U.S. non-manufacturing purchasing managers index fell 2.8 points to 52.9, implying the slowest expansion in slightly more than two years. The indices for production, orders and jobs declined by 3.7, 5.7, and 3.3 points. Meanwhile, Euroland’s services purchasing managers index edged 0.2 points higher to 53.3. Service sector activity expanded more rapidly in Germany, France, Spain and Ireland, but Italian activity in the services sector fell marginally for the first time in 14 months.
The differential between the U.S. non-manufacturing PMI and Euroland’s services PMI swung from +2.6 points in April to -0.4 points in May. The sum of that differential and the manufacturing PMI spread, which had been +1.7 in April, swung to a negative 0.6 in May, its most Ezone-advantageous reading since February.
