Only a Marginal Change in U.S.-Minus-Eurozone PMI Spreads
July 6, 2015
The U.S. non-manufacturing PMI rose 0.3 points to a two-month high of 56.0 in June. The advance in the index was half as much as the increase in Euroland’s services PMI from 53.8 in May to a 49-month high of 54.4 in June. The differential between those two indices narrowed by 0.3 points to 1.6, whereas the differential between the two economies’ manufacturing purchasing manager indices rose 0.4 points due to a greater U.S. increase of 0.7 points set against an increase in Euroland’s counterpart of only 0.3 points. The sum of the two spreads, shown in the rightmost column below, edged up 0.1 point to 2.6 in June but remained considerably narrower than last year’s widest gap of 15.2 points in November.
The quickening expansion rate in U.S. non-manufacturing activity last month primarily reflects faster growth in sales/production, up 2.0 points. The orders index only increased by 0.4 points, while the measured trend in jobs and prices fell 2.6 and 2.9 points, respectively.
Among reporting countries in the eurozone, the service sector PMIs increased between May and June by 1.9 points in Ireland, 1.3 points in France, 0.9 points in Italy and 0.8 points in Germany. Spain’s index fell 2.3 points to 56.1 from 58.4, however. All five nations had a June service-sector PMI higher than 53.0, including Ireland’s 105-month high of 63.3.
