FOMC Preview

Federal Reserve officials have gradually modified their forward policy guidance, with three messages in mind:

  1. Policy will be data driven and not constrained to any pre-conceived timetable.
  2. The first rate hike would not occur before this June meeting but could happen anytime from that meeting onward.
  3. Once the first rate increase is done, subsequent changes are likely to follow a more gradual path than in prior rate tightening cycles.

The table below shows key market vital signs at the time of previous FOMC meetings.  Since the last one on April 29, the main market changes involve a 4.6% rise in the dollar against the yen and a 30-basis point increase in the 10-year Treasury yield.  Oil is only 3.0% higher in price now than then.  The Dow Jones Industrials despite recent losses has declined just 0.6% on balance, and the euro has extended its corrective rebound against the dollar by 0.9%.

At 14:00 local time in Washington D.C., the FOMC statement and updated forecasts will be released.  A press conference with Chair Yellen will commence thirty minutes later.  The prior statement in late April downgraded the economic assessment is certain ways.  Information since then have led markets to trim expectations that the fed funds rate will be raised today, and the released statement is likely to yield less market-moving information than what transpires during Yellen’s press conference.
