Uncompromising and Incompetent Leadership

May 31, 2015

It’s hard to maintain critical mass when the implicit message is lead, follow or get the hell out of the way.  Organizations need dreamers and leaders.  Success also requires good administrators and committed worker bees.  In the case of a local organization, damage to morale from the refusal by leaders to compromise is multiplied by an absence of competent managers among the committed few.  Clerical work is beneath the leadership’s pay grade, and disrespected people who for so long made sure the essential details and other tasks that kept the organization humming are stepping away in their volunteer time and financial support.  The road to good intentions has gone astray, and a process that started with just small mistakes is falling apart more quickly.   I cannot help but wonder if on a very basis level what I’m witnessing up close and personal is a microcosm of the breakdown in the ability of western democracies to muster support through political compromise for a core of laws that promote good but also sustain a necessary sense of belonging and shared destiny.
