FOMC Preview

July 30, 2014

A new policy statement will be released by the Federal Open Market Committee will be released at 14:00 EDT (18:00 GMT).  The prior statement spoke about a post-1Q rebound of the economy, and this communique is likely to upgrade that trend further.  Of particular note will be how the statement incorporates the changed nuance introduced by Chairperson Yellen in testimony earlier this month that allowed for the possibility that the labor market could continue to perform better than assumed previously and that an earlier onset of rate increases would happen if that becomes the case.  The Fed has been cutting its asset purchases by $10 billion a month at each scheduled meeting since the one held last December.  The pace until that point had been $85 billion per month, but this statement should announce a cut to $25 billion per month.  Two more meetings, and quantitative stimulus will be eliminated at the current pace.  Two other things to watch for in today’s statement are 1) whether Dallas Fed President Richard Fisher dissents in favor of a tighter policy normalization trajectory and 2) whether the statement uses somewhat different language in describing inflation.  It has been saying, “inflation has been running below the Committee’s longer-run objective, but longer-term inflation expectations have remained stable.”

Since the June meeting as can be seen below, the dollar has strengthened, Treasury yields and oil prices have eased, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average has barely changed on balance.
