FOMC Preview

April 30, 2014

This should be a routine event as FOMC meetings go.  Expectations of a further $10 billion drop in the Fed’s monthly asset purchases are virtually certain to be met.  No post-announcement press conference is scheduled, nor are updated forecasts being released.  All the market gets is a statement that will mimic most of the elements of previous statements.  The prior one on March 19 correctly noted that “activity slowed during the winter months.”  It was observed that labor market trends had been mixed but “show continued improvement,” and this continues to be the case.  After the prior statement, which drew a dovish dissent from Kocherlakota, Janet Yellen created a stir in the press conference by using language that suggested the fed funds rate could begin to rise by the spring of 2015.  There been some backtracking from that statement and will be no verbal remarks this time around to revisit that controversy.

In the six week since the March 19 statement, the dollar has risen 0.4% against both the yen and euro.  ECB President Draghi has warned of an easier policy if the euro strengthens further from present elevated levels.  The 10-year Treasury yield is five basis points lower now than then.  The net changes in the price of West Texas Intermediate oil (down 0.4%) and the Dow Jones Industrial Average (+1.3%) have been modest.
