Factory Conditions Continued to Deteriorate in the U.S. and Euroland

It was disappointing but predictable that Euroland’s downturn in manufacturing continued in July.  Germany, France, Italy and Austria had lower readings in July than June, and each was below the 50 no-change line.  In a surprise, Germany’s score of 43.0, a 37-month low, indicated a steeper rate of contraction than last month in France, Italy, Holland, Austria and Ireland.  The Greek and Spanish indices signaled a milder rate of contraction in July than in June, but these respective scores of 41.9 and 42.3 nonetheless convey a severe downturn nonetheless.  One bright spot was Ireland’s 15-month high of 53.9, and another was further evidence of lessening input price strain. 

The U.S. manufacturing ISM purchasing managers index was below 50 for a second consecutive month, albeit only marginally so.  The orders subcomponent was also below 50 at 48, and the jobs component dropped 4.6 points to 52.0, indicating a considerably slower rate of jobs creation last month. 

The differential between the U.S. and Ezone factory PMI indices widened to 5.8 points from 4.6 points.  Europe’s economy is clearly in direr straits than America’s, and the euro’s monthly average value declined for a fifth consecutive time.
